Smoltz is outta here!

It’s official, the Red Sox starter with an 8.66 ERA has been designated for assignment.
John Smoltz is outta here!

I’ll give him credit for being an amazing pitcher in his younger days. One year he had a postseason with a 2.65 ERA and went 15-4. In his career, he’s had 3,044 strikeouts. 212 wins. 154 saves. Impressive, but he couldn’t pull it off for the Red Sox.

So, Theo Epstein has announced the news. But it seems that John Smotlz might still be with the Red Sox organization, as he might pitch for Pawtucket. The Paw Sox also need some pitchers, and Smoltz might be the answer. And who knows, maybe down the line Smoltz could be a Boston reliever?

Here are some words about Smoltz from Theo Epstein, Terry Francona and Jason Varitek:

How did John react to the news? Theo Epstein says:
“John understood and we asked him just to go home for a few days and
think about what he wants to do, think about if he can still help. The
good thing about the designation is that it buys some time to come up
with the appropriate assignment. I’m sure I’ll have something for you
guys next week.”

How do you feel about John? Terry Francona says:
“I think we appreciated what his pedigree and his past was and respect
it a lot. And he didn’t let us
down as far as [the type of] person he is, or his work ethic. He gave
everything he had. He just got to a point where we think we need to
make a change to help our team do better. But that would never lessen
the respect we have for him and what he’s accomplished in his career.”

Why do you think John hasn’t performed? Jason Varitek says:
“I think it’s just him adjusting to his new shoulder. I
just know that the man has put in a tremendous amount of work to even
be where he was. That’s commendable in itself. The Baltimore start,
what he went through to even take the ball for six innings — that
should be recognized.”

Why can’t I strikeout batters as well as I used to?!

So, referring back to my previous post of “Do we need Smoltz?”, I think I my plead of getting rid of Smoltz has finally been answered.

Good-bye, Smoltzy!

Lost by 2 runs, again

This is a very frustrating loss. We came into Tampa hoping to take a win since the big ALCS loss last fall. And yet, we’re leaving Tampa with a lost series and having to take on our rivals the Yankees tomorrow.

The Red Sox lost 4-6 to the Rays. There were no 13 innings like last night, but there also wasn’t a bottom of the ninth either, because the Rays had already won.

Penny didn’t give up a run in the 1st, but gave up 2 in the second inning. We also got a run in the second inning, by JASON BAY! He got a solo homer, his 21st of the year, Hopefully this is the turn around for Bay! Then in the sixth inning, our newbie Martinez got his first homer for the Red Sox. Pedroia and Baldelli also touched home base for the Red Sox. Jason Varitek, Jacoby Ellsbury, Kevin Youkilis and Victor Martinez also all got doubles.

In the end, Penny gave up 5 runs, and Delcarmen gave up 1. The pitching didn’t do its job tonight.

And so, now we are 2-13 at Tropicana Field. Ouch. I’m glad were getting out of Tampa. Let’s hope the Bronx serves us better.

This field is bad luck.

Lester, Declarmen, and a win

When Lester’s first pitch wasn’t sent out of the park by Adam Kennedy,
it was a sigh of relief. When the first half of the first inning was
over, another sigh of relief.

And then Boston got a run in the 2nd inning, and our wounds had healed. We can do this!
Lester
didn’t give up a run ’till the 6th inning, where he gave up 4 runs. But
then Declarmen, Bard and Papelbon took over and only gave up one run
between them.

And before you know it, it was 8-5, Sox, top of the ninth and Papelbon struck out the last batter and the Red Sox won!

A
big thanks to the win is to Big ol’ Papi, who gave us three runs by his
three-run home run, and doubles from Youkilis, Varitek, Drew, Lowell
and Ortiz.

Finally a Win Against the Blue Jays! But why move Jacoby to batter #8?

The Red Sox finished the 4 game series with the Toronto Blue Jays with
a nice win, 8-2, with four home runs, two from Youkilis, one from
Pedroia and another from Jason Bay. A great feat, but the one thing I’m
not too happy about is moving Jacoby Ellsbury into the eight batting
position.
It’s not like Jacoby was doing horrible, yah, he hasn’t scored in the last 3 games, but he hasn’t done horrible batting first.
The new lineup for the Red Sox is:
Pedroia
Drew
Youkilis
Bay
Lowell
Ortiz
Varitek
Ellsbury
Green
I understand moving up Bay, but I think Jacoby doesn’t deserve to move all the way down to number 8!

Let’s hope when they open the series at Detroit Tuesday, Jacoby is back on top.

Congrats on your win today Red Sox!
