3 Ejections, 1 Rain Delay, and a Sox Win

Aw, what a night! We saw a little bit of everything tonight. A charge to the mound, Jason Bay back to being Jason Bay, a long rain delay and the most important, another win for the Red Sox. 7-5 over the Detroit Tigers.

It’s not very often when you see a Red Sox player charge the mound. But, last night was an exception…let’s set the scene:

At Monday night’s game Brad Penny hit Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera with a pitch in the top of the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, Kevin Youkilis was hit by a (most likely retailiating) pitch. Then in the eighth inning of the game, Ramon Ramirez hit Detroit’s Brandon Inge.

Then, last night, in the first inning, Junichi Tazawa hit Miguel Cabrera (2nd time this guy has been hit). Then in the bottom of the 1st inning, Detroit’s Rick Porcello threw a nasty pitch at Victor Martinez. It didn’t hit him, but it could’ve have easily been taken as a threat. Martinez took a few steps toward the mound, but did not do anything. Then, in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Youkilis was up.

The first pitch he recieved hit him in the back. Youkilis didn’t think twice. He charged the mound, threw his helmet at Porcello and attacked him. Within moments, both teams, in their entirety had stomed the pitching mound, pulling the pitcher and batter apart. Luckily, no one got hurt. Both Rick Porcello and Kevin Youkilis got thrown out of the game. Terry Francona later got thrown out of the game because of his disagreement with a play at 2nd base.
The umpires weren’t doing their jobs either night in my opinion, as last night the umpires should have been able to see the tensions and hostility going on, and until a batter actually charged the mound, they finally took action.

Putting all that action aside, let’s talk about the actual pitching and offense.

For pitching, first time starter Junichi Tazawa took the mound last night. He had a rough start as he gave up 3 runs in the first, but after he got rid of jitters, he did great. And just a note, only 1 run was an earned run, there was an error in the 1st, a throwing one by Nick Green. Tazawa pitched five quality innings, with no more runs scored after the 1st and then was replaced by another Red Sox newbie, Fernando Cabrera who got his first hold with the Red Sox. Saito and Bard both gave up no runs in their one innings pitched, but we got a little dissapointment from Papelbon, who gave up 2 runs in the ninth. He did not get the loss though. In total, only 5 runs were given up by the Red Sox. 2 were unearned. Our pitching is looking better!

The offense did great last night! We were down by three in the bottom of the 2nd, with two on and here comes Jason Bay. He’s had two home runs in the last week, and the whole stadium is cheering him on. He takes a swing and BAM! The ball soars over the left field wall. A three run homer for Jason Bay! I bet he’s feeling a lot better now. Then in the 3rd, Mike Lowell is up, taking Kevin Youkilis’ spot and he rips out a home run. The same event happens in the 5th when he hit a two-run home run. Lowell wasn’t even suppose to be in the game, yet here he is hitting 2 big home runs. We got another run in the 7th to help secure our lead. Ellsbury, Pedroia and Ortiz all got hits tonight.Ellsbury got his 52nd stolen base and Pedroia got his 15th.

Quite an interesting game, but a great one because we won. Our wild-card spot became a little bit more secure, we’re 1 1/2 games over the Rangers, the Tampa Bay Rays lost also, so we have a 3 game lead over them now. Unfortunately the Yankees won, but there’s still home we can take back the lead again.

Let’s go Red Sox!

Last night was a good night

The Red Sox won. The Yankees lost. The Rays lost.

Yes, last night was a good night for the Sox. We’re only 5 1/2 games behind the Yankees now, and we spaced out our lead over the Tampa Bay Rays by 2. Even our wild-card spot became more secure because now were one game ahead of the Rangers, who we were originally tied with for the spot.

Penny took the mound last night, not giving up a run till the 4th inning, where he gave up two runs, and giving up another in the 5th. Penny pitched the sixth inning, and then was replaced by Delcarmen, who almost lost it for us, because he gave up two runs in the seventh, tying the game 5-5. It was a “oh NO!” moment because the Red Sox really needed to end their six-game losing streak. But, Ramirez was brought in in the eighth, not giving up any runs and Papelbon finished the game up with an easy 1-2-3 out inning.

As for the offense, I think we’re slowly getting out of our slump. Guess who’s finally hitting home runs again? My man JASON BAY! He’s hit two home runs in the last week, last night was his 22nd of the year. He’s hit more home runs this week than in the month of July. It’s good to see he’s finally coming out of his strike-out-all-the-time phase he was having for awhile. Pedroia and Nick Green also got home runs last night, a great thing to see. Ellsbury started off the game with a nice double, and that kept our hopes high through out the game, as we were up by 4 in the 4th inning. Drew scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to make the game 6-5, and we were able to keep out small, but good lead till the top of the ninth and when Papelbon got the last out, it was a sigh of relief because our losing streak was over.

It’s over, we can look up again and hopefully the Sox keep winning and the Yankees keep losing!

 The losing streak is over!

Lost by 2 runs, again

This is a very frustrating loss. We came into Tampa hoping to take a win since the big ALCS loss last fall. And yet, we’re leaving Tampa with a lost series and having to take on our rivals the Yankees tomorrow.

The Red Sox lost 4-6 to the Rays. There were no 13 innings like last night, but there also wasn’t a bottom of the ninth either, because the Rays had already won.

Penny didn’t give up a run in the 1st, but gave up 2 in the second inning. We also got a run in the second inning, by JASON BAY! He got a solo homer, his 21st of the year, Hopefully this is the turn around for Bay! Then in the sixth inning, our newbie Martinez got his first homer for the Red Sox. Pedroia and Baldelli also touched home base for the Red Sox. Jason Varitek, Jacoby Ellsbury, Kevin Youkilis and Victor Martinez also all got doubles.

In the end, Penny gave up 5 runs, and Delcarmen gave up 1. The pitching didn’t do its job tonight.

And so, now we are 2-13 at Tropicana Field. Ouch. I’m glad were getting out of Tampa. Let’s hope the Bronx serves us better.

This field is bad luck.

Not what we had planned

Well, it’s wasn’t what I was hoping to happen. I wanted Lester to show Garza what he’s made of, the Red Sox’s offense to be on fire and Papelbon to take the save. Most of all, I wanted the Red Sox to win!

Did that happen? No, not exactly…

The Red Sox lost, 2-4 to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Lester did an amazing job pitching over 6 innings and struck out 10. He left the ball game with the Red Sox up by two. The two runs were scored by Pedroia and Youk, both solo home runs. They were to be the only runs scored in the game for the Sox.

We were doing good, but then we had a pictching slip by Bard to tie up the game (2-2) and another BIG slip by Saito which let Evan Longoria hit the two-run home run that allowed the Rays to take the win.
