Is Smoltz being greedy?
Smoltz has declined all waivers from other teams and he has refused the offer of playing in the Red Sox minors.
Is that such a surprise?
With John Smoltz declining all waivers from other teams, the Red Sox now have to pay him his 5.5 million dollar contract in full. The Red Sox have by Sunday to release him or trade him. In all honesty, I don’t blame the other teams for not wanting to pay him 5.5 million dollars, because frankly he’s not worth it.
This is what I wrote about Smoltz yesterday, before he decided not to play in the minors:
A comment on a Smoltz entry:
“Another example of Epstein stupidity. Waste of money that could have
gone to more quality. Nothing personal John Smoltz, you deserve to be
in the Hall of Fame, but it’s time to retire before you ruin your
legacy any further.” (TGinRI)
I totally agree. If I was Epstein, I think I would option him to Pawtucket for two reasons: A, The Red Sox are going to have to pay his 5.5 million dollar contract either way, so let’s get our money’s “worth” and B, We got rid of 3 Pawtucket pitchers recently (designated for assingment) and even Smoltz’s inconsistent pitching could do some good for the team.
This is my opinion today:
This is just another greedy move by Smoltz. John was offered a reasonable salary by the Atlanta Braves for his age and pitching ability last year. He turned it down because it wasn’t enough money for him. We the Red Sox took him for 5.5 million dollars and that made him happy. And now, he won’t even pitch for our minor teams after we’re paying him the most he’s going to get anywhere! The Dodgers and Rangers (who we play tomorrow) have shown some interest in him if he were to be released, but than the Red Sox would still be stuck paying his 5.5 million dollars contract. Am I the only one seeing this greed? If he plays for another team, say the Dodgers or Rangers, he’ll probably get the Major League minimum, which is 390,000 dollars.
This is what Terry Francona said:
“Smoltzy has indicated that he is not interested in going to the bullpen
with us, [or] furthering that venture. The next move would be for the
organization to trade or release him.” (redsox.com)
What do you think we should do with John Smoltz?
Last night was a good night
The Red Sox won. The Yankees lost. The Rays lost.
Yes, last night was a good night for the Sox. We’re only 5 1/2 games behind the Yankees now, and we spaced out our lead over the Tampa Bay Rays by 2. Even our wild-card spot became more secure because now were one game ahead of the Rangers, who we were originally tied with for the spot.
Penny took the mound last night, not giving up a run till the 4th inning, where he gave up two runs, and giving up another in the 5th. Penny pitched the sixth inning, and then was replaced by Delcarmen, who almost lost it for us, because he gave up two runs in the seventh, tying the game 5-5. It was a “oh NO!” moment because the Red Sox really needed to end their six-game losing streak. But, Ramirez was brought in in the eighth, not giving up any runs and Papelbon finished the game up with an easy 1-2-3 out inning.
As for the offense, I think we’re slowly getting out of our slump. Guess who’s finally hitting home runs again? My man JASON BAY! He’s hit two home runs in the last week, last night was his 22nd of the year. He’s hit more home runs this week than in the month of July. It’s good to see he’s finally coming out of his strike-out-all-the-time phase he was having for awhile. Pedroia and Nick Green also got home runs last night, a great thing to see. Ellsbury started off the game with a nice double, and that kept our hopes high through out the game, as we were up by 4 in the 4th inning. Drew scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to make the game 6-5, and we were able to keep out small, but good lead till the top of the ninth and when Papelbon got the last out, it was a sigh of relief because our losing streak was over.
Transactions in the last 9 days
Looking at the Red Sox’s transactions in the last nine days, I was stunned to find out how many pitchers we had let go and how many were on the DL.
According to redsox.com, here’s the last nine days:
We have put 4 players designated for assignment, 3 pitchers: Smotlz, Gonzalez, Traber and, 1 short stop, Velazquez.
We have put 3 players on the disabled list: Kottaras, Lowrie, Baldelli
We got 1 new player: SS Chris Woodward from the Seattle Mariners.
We called up 3 pitchers: Traber, Cabrera, Gonzalez. (Traber and Gonzalez no longer with Red Sox)
0 runs again
So the Red Sox got 0 runs the second night in a row, but did the Yankees? Nope, they spanked us 0-5, for the 3rd win in a row. What are we doing wrong? Is it the pitching? The hitting?
Our starting pitcher tonight was Buchholz, he only gave up 2 runs in 6 innings. Okay, not bad. Then Ramirez came in and gave up a run and than the newbie from Pawtucket Enrique Gonzalez gave up 2 runs. Yes, not the best, but I don’t think this was our worst problem.
Our offense, I hate to say it, sucked tonight. In nine innings, we got 4 runs. 2 by Ellsbury, 1 by Martinez and one by Youkilis. Two batters walked, Martinez and Oritz. So, that’s 6 people who got on base tonight. No one came close to touching home. Only Ortiz was in scoring position.
The Yankees got nine hits, 7 walks and 5 runs. The Sox and the Yankees had the same number of AB, 30.
So what went wrong tonight? Are we afraid of the rotten Yankees?
Smoltz is outta here!
It’s official, the Red Sox starter with an 8.66 ERA has been designated for assignment.
John Smoltz is outta here!
I’ll give him credit for being an amazing pitcher in his younger days. One year he had a postseason with a 2.65 ERA and went 15-4. In his career, he’s had 3,044 strikeouts. 212 wins. 154 saves. Impressive, but he couldn’t pull it off for the Red Sox.
So, Theo Epstein has announced the news. But it seems that John Smotlz might still be with the Red Sox organization, as he might pitch for Pawtucket. The Paw Sox also need some pitchers, and Smoltz might be the answer. And who knows, maybe down the line Smoltz could be a Boston reliever?
Here are some words about Smoltz from Theo Epstein, Terry Francona and Jason Varitek:
How did John react to the news? Theo Epstein says:
“John understood and we asked him just to go home for a few days and
think about what he wants to do, think about if he can still help. The
good thing about the designation is that it buys some time to come up
with the appropriate assignment. I’m sure I’ll have something for you
guys next week.” (redsox.com)
How do you feel about John? Terry Francona says:
“I think we appreciated what his pedigree and his past was and respect
it a lot. And he didn’t let us
down as far as [the type of] person he is, or his work ethic. He gave
everything he had. He just got to a point where we think we need to
make a change to help our team do better. But that would never lessen
the respect we have for him and what he’s accomplished in his career.” (redsox.com)
Why do you think John hasn’t performed? Jason Varitek says:
“I think it’s just him adjusting to his new shoulder. I
just know that the man has put in a tremendous amount of work to even
be where he was. That’s commendable in itself. The Baltimore start,
what he went through to even take the ball for six innings — that
should be recognized.” (redsox.com)
Good-bye, Smoltzy!
15 innings, 2 runs scored
The 2 runs scored were not by us. Rather by our rivals. We lost game 2 of the New York series, 0-2.
Beckett did an amazing job, pitching seven innings and not a run scored. Unfortunately, so did Yankees pitcher, A.J. Burnett.
We went 14.5 innings tied 0-0 until we made a big whoops to Alex Rodriguez who hit a two run homer that ended the 15 inning game.
There’s really not much to say about this game. The innings kept going by, no runs scored for either team. Ellsbury got a couple of singles, and a stolen base (his 50th, tying his record last year) but no runs. A single by Ortiz and a single by Youkilis.
HOPEFULLY, tomorrow’s game will turn out better. (And a little bit shorter, tonight’s game was over 5 hours!!)
A win for the PawSox, and a new pitcher for Boston
I’m so happy to say that our Boston Red Sox AAA farm team has pulled off a win, and a 4-run win at that, over the Norfolk Tides tonight. The Pawsox also enjoyed a sell-out night, as they gave away replica jerseys of Dustin Pedoria.
Jeff Bailey, who has played with Boston, got the offense going, and it turned out a good night for the Pawsox. Congrats, guys!
Also news for both the PawSox and Red Sox, pitcher Junichi Tazawa (picture below) was called up to Boston, allowing Zack Borowiak from Salem (single A farm team) to come up to Pawtucket.
Update on Paul
I kinda felt bad what I said about Paul McAnulty, I actually found out that he holds the home runs and RBI records at McCoy Stadium for the Pawtucket PawSox.
So I’m “sorta” happy to say, that Paul has been signed by the Colorado Rockies and will play on their triple AAA team, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
So he’s no longer a Paw Sox, he’s a Sky Sox.
I promise, that will be the last on Paul McAnulty. His first game will be August 10th.
